About Kristina

kristina-hagman

Kristina Hagman is a life-long oil painter and print-maker. Her work spans themes and mediums, but all are inspired by place, with a deep nostalgia and a commitment to landscape.

Kristina had her first professional show at the age of 23 at the Arthur Elrod Gallery in Palm Springs. Her early work, inspired by O’Keefe an early feminist artists and the landscapes she depicted brought her to Santa Fe New Mexico where she studied under the mentorship of generous artists of the John Slone Figurative Drawing Tradition. It was there that Kristina first began working with print-making.

Her life and art has taken her around the world, from Tokyo’s walls of color to the sloping overgrown freeways of the Pacific Northwest. While living in Seattle Kristina was inspired by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai and his 36 views of Mount Fuji. Using the Japanese master as an exemplar, she created 36 Views of Mount Rainier though using western oil based inks and wood block printing techniques.

Kristina now live in Alexandria Virginia, close the great Potomac River. Her current work is dominated by landscapes and commissioned portraits.

Unconventional Education

I was painting next to my mother and grandmother as a child, they both painted to sooth their souls. I started selling my work at 23. In my early 20’s I was married to professional artist, Brian Blount who introduced me to the John Sloane Drawing group. These working artists met each week to draw from the figure and exchange information about exhibition opportunities and current art events. It was in this society that my professional life began. Also while living in Santa Fe I studied with Bay Area figurative artists, Wayne Thiebaud, Nathan Oliveira, and Richard Diebenkorn (all such generous mentors) at the Santa Fe Institute of Art and Design. I studied printmaking from Ron Pokrasso who can be now be found at Timberwick, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I continued to learn the craft of printing while publishing my own works with master printmakers, Sheila Coppola of Sidereal Press in Tukwila, Washington, Madeleine Zyarewicz of Panorama Press in Highland Park, California and Gloria Kondrup of Architype Press in Pasadena, California. I have dyslexia, early on I was encouraged to draw and paint in order to express myself when the written word frustrated me. It was not until I was in my 50’s that I took on the challenge of writing. I was helped in this process by working in Santa Monica College’s Learning Disabilities Program and collaborating with author Elizabeth Kaye to write a memoir that was published my Thomas Dunne Books.

In my image-making, the subjects dictate the medium. After losing my father to Leukemia and my mother to Alzheimer’s I turned my artistic energy to writing a book about the family who had always supported me as an artist.
